South Korea at the Sacramento 2023 Homeless World Cup.

The Homeless World Cup Foundation and The Big Issue South Korea today announced that the 2024 Homeless World Cup will take place in Seoul, the first time the Homeless World Cup has been held in Asia since the tournament was introduced in 2003.

The Seoul 2024 Homeless World Cup, set to take place in late September and early October next year across 8-days in South Korea’s capital city, marks a significant milestone in the Homeless World Cup’s 20-year history and promises to be a once in a lifetime moment for everyone involved.

The location and dates of the tournament will be announced early in 2024 and this exciting announcement will be welcomed by nearly 70 Homeless World Cup Member Countries across the globe.

The Homeless World Cup is a world class sporting spectacle which has the power to change the lives of participants and shape attitudes towards the global issue of homelessness, using the universal language of football.

Advanced discussions are also in place for the 2025 and 2026 Homeless World Cups after the tournament made an emphatic return in July, the 2023 Sacramento Homeless World Cup, held in California’s state capitol was the first time the event had visited the US.

Mel Young, HWCF President and co-founder, said:  “We are absolutely delighted to be able to confirm our 2024 Homeless Would Cup will be held in Seoul, South Korea and thrilled to be visiting Asia for the first time since the tournament started in 2003. After a highly successful tournament this year in California, we can’t wait to reconnect our global Member Countries and Homeless World Cup family again, this time in Seoul for the 19th edition of the tournament.

“Seoul is the world’s 16th largest capital city and South Korea is a wonderful place to visit with a huge football fan base and culture. There has been significant interest for some time from our partner The Big Issue South Korea to host the Homeless World Cup, so we are pleased to confirm that the Seoul, will be hosting next year’s tournament.

 “Over the years we have proved that using the power of football can change lives and we remain committed to tackling and ending global homelessness. We are also engaged with several cities looking to host future editions of the Homeless World Cup which is incredibly positive and further cements the tournament as a key part of the global sporting calendar.”

Sooryul Kim, The Big Issue South Korea President, said: “We are thrilled from the bottom of our hearts to share in the passion and delight of homeless players around the world. We aim to raise awareness in Korean society about homelessness through the Homeless World Cup. The Korean society often perceive homelessness narrowly in terms of policy and still view housing primarily as an investment product rather than a basic right. By hosting the Homeless World Cup—an international festival—we hope to draw citizens’ attention to guarantee housing rights and lay the socially supporting foundation for policy changes.”

There is further excitement for the Homeless World Cup in 2024, with the release of the eagerly anticipated film The Beautiful Game. Starring Bill Nighy & Michael Ward, the film follows a team of English homeless footballers, led by their coach Mal (Bill Nighy), who travel from London to Rome to compete in The Homeless World Cup. At the last minute they decide to bring with them a talented striker Vinny (Michael Ward), but he must confront his own issues and once-promising past, in order to help the team win the Homeless World Cup and move on with his own life. The film will be released globally on Netflix in Spring 2024

An estimated 100m people are homeless worldwide. As many as 1 billion people lack adequate housing. The characteristics and causes of homelessness around the world are complex and varied. Homeless people experience social exclusion and stigmatisation, economic hardship and poverty, and physical and mental health problems.

The Homeless World Cup exists to help end this crisis in all its forms.

The Big Issue Korea exists to dismantle poverty by creating opportunity, We do so through self-help, social trading and business solutions. The Big Issue Korea began in 2010 with the publication of a magazine called "The Big Issue." We have established a network with the United Kingdom, where the Big Issue originated, as well as the Big Issue in Australia, the Republic of South Africa, Japan, Taiwan, and the International Network of Street Papers (INSP). We have been providing services and various networking to support people experiencing homelessness, helping them overcome financial difficulties so they can integrate into Korean society. The Big Issue Korea was the official organizer of the Korean team, which won the Best Newcomer Team award at the Homeless World Cup 2010 in Rio de Janeiro. 2024 홈리스월드컵의 도착지, 서울

대한축구협회 축구사랑나눔재단과 사단법인 빅이슈코리아는 홈리스월드컵 재단으로부터 2024년 제19회 홈리스월드컵의 개최지로 서울이 선정되었다는 소식을 18일에 접수했다고 밝혔다. 

홈리스월드컵 대회가 시작된 2003년에 이후에 아시아에서는 최초로 서울에서 열리게 되었다. 홈리스월드컵은 ‘축구’라는 보편적인 언어를 통해 취약계층 참여자의 삶을 긍정적으로 변화시키고, 주거 빈곤이라는 세계적인 사회적 문제를 해결하기 위한 긍정적인 태도와 인식을 만드는데 큰 기여를 하고 있는 세계적인 사회혁신적 국제 축구대회다. 

'한국의 서울에서 8일에 걸쳐 내년 9월 말~10월 초 사이에 열릴 예정인 서울 2024 홈리스월드컵은 홈리스월드컵의 20년 역사에 중요한 이정표이며 관련된 모든 사람들에게 일생에 한 번뿐인 순간이 될 것을 약속한다.

홈리스월드컵재단 이사장이자 공동 설립자인 멜 영(Mel Young)은 “2024 홈리스월드컵을 서울에서 개최하게 되어 매우 기쁘다. 서울은 세계에서 16번째 큰 수도이고, 한국은 축구 팬층과 문화가 두터운 걸로 알고 있다. 대회 시작 이래 아시아 최초 개최라 감격스럽다. 우리는 수년에 걸쳐 축구의 힘을 통해 홈리스의 삶이 바뀔 수 있다는 것을 입증해 왔다. 전 세계의 주거 빈곤 문제를 해결하고 종식시키기 위해 다시 70개의 홈리스월드컵 회원국을 연결하고 싶다.”고 말했다.

빅이슈코리아 김수열 이사장은 “세계 각국의 홈리스 선수들의 열정과 환희의 순간을 한국 시민들에게 전할 수 있게 되어 진심으로 기쁘다. 우리는 홈리스월드컵을 통해 한국 사회에 큰 경종을 울리고 싶다. 한국 사회는 아직 ‘홈리스’에 대한 정책적 범위를 좁게 해석하고 있으며, ‘주거’에 대하여 ‘기본권’이 아닌 ‘투기 상품’으로 인식하는 경향이 높다. 우리는 세계적인 축제의 장인 이 토너먼트를 통해 주거 빈곤 문제에 대한 시민의 큰 관심을 일으키고, 정책 변화를 위한 사회적 지지 기반을 만들 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.”고 전했다.  

뜨거운 기대를 모으고 있는 영화 <뷰티풀 게임>의 개봉과 함께 2024년 홈리스월드컵에 대한 기대감이 더욱 높아지고 있다. 빌 나이(Bill Nighy)와 마이클 워드(Michael Ward)가 주연을 맡은 이 영화는 감독 말(빌 나이)이 이끄는 영국 홈리스 축구팀을 따라가며 홈리스월드컵 출전기를 그리고 있다. 마지막 순간에 영국 홈리스 축구팀은 재능 있는 공격수 비니(마이클 워드)를 데려오기로 결정하지만, 그는 팀이 홈리스월드컵에서 우승하고 삶을 회복하기 위해 자신의 문제 그리고 한때 유망했던 스스로의 과거에 직면해야 한다. 영화 <뷰티풀 게임>은 2024년 봄 넷플릭스를 통해 전 세계적으로 공개될 예정이다.

전 세계적으로 약 1억 명의 홈리스가 존재한다. 전세계 10억 명에 달하는 인구는 비적정 주거생활을 하며 다양하고 복잡한 특성과 원인으로 홈리스 상태에 놓이게 된다. 홈리스는 사회적 배제와 낙인, 경제적 어려움과 빈곤, 신체적, 정신적 건강 문제를 경험한다.

홈리스월드컵은 그러한 모든 형태의 홈리스 상태를 종식시키기 위해 존재한다.
